"We all live in a yellow submarine..."

Er...red and green submarine, that is. This Saturday Paul, Kirsty, Hels, Ara and I went to check out the North Korean submarine near Gangneung. 26 red guerrillas (we really don't know how they fit 26 men in here--this sub is tiny!) from North Korea boarded this sub on September 14, 1996...3 of them left the sub to infiltrate the land (it's a good spot to do so because the water is quite deep and closely connected to the mountain) and learn about the facilities and air force near Gangneung...the leader of the 3 signaled the sub to come ashore since the waves were rising...but the sub got washed away by the waves and stuck under water on the rocks. After they burned up the main documents and all information valuable to South Korea, they came ashore and escaped to the Gwaebangsan Mountains. South Korea's counterespionage activities continued until November 5, 1996. Of the original 26 spies, one was taken alive, 13 were killed by SK soldiers, 11 were killed by their colleagues and one remained missing.
You can tour this little beauty (and the ROK naval warship, both of which are part of Unification Park, a museum designed around the historical conflict and hope for reunification between the North and the South) for just 2,000 won ($2). They even give you hard hats to wear inside the sub!

Paul, why can't you just follow the rules and wear the stupid hat...?

Dials inside the sub.
