Sarah Plain and Tall

Rod Dreher basically expresses my thoughts about Mrs. Palin, and the Conservative response to her. Here's a highlight:
To be clear: I find Sarah Palin an admirable person. Everything that I liked about her in the beginning I still like about her. I just don't think that she's ready to be vice president. That's not a judgment of who she is culturally, which is something I identify with to a large extent, and affirm. It's a judgment of her competence for the job. Surely conservatives don't want to be in the position of claiming that identity is a sufficient qualification for a job. Isn't that the basis of the conservative case against affirmative action -- that it elevates identity over core competence?

I've been really trying to give Sarah Palin a chance, but after last night's "What, I've been doing this for like, 5 weeks?" bit, I've decided: this is not the elections for high school government. Winking at the camera? Give me a break.

I think she's probably a very good governor in Alaska. If she'd stayed there a little longer, who knows what she could have become? The best case scenario for her now (in terms of her political career) is to lose as VP and then go back to being governor. If she remains popular there and continues to do well, she could do a lot of good. And, of course, who knows what could happen on the national stage in another eight or twelve years? But if she wins and has to carry McCain's water for four years, she'll be ruined politically and probably won't ever recover. Neither will the country. (Of course, the same holds true for an Obama administration, at least as far as the country is concerned.)
